DHS History

DHS Built: 1930
First Graduating Class:
1933

Page Stadium:  1934

(This historical information compiled by Merritt C. Nauts, DeVilbiss principal, 1931-1960 and the 1950 DHS Student Handbook  and sent to the DHS of the '50's site by Barbara Toth Kaduk, class of 1951).

The obtaining of the stadium is one of the most colorful parts of our school history. During the first year, 1931, DeVilbiss played all football games away because there was no home stadium. In 1932 temporary stands were furnished by the Board of Education. Early in 1934 the DeVilbiss Athletic Board started construction of the stadium under the Works Progress Administration. It was completed in June and was used for graduation exercises. At the dedication ceremonies in September, it was named in honor of Henry A. Page, a frequent benefactor to the school in its beginning years. The stadium was designed by William Hallauer, then of the DeVilbiss faculty. The original cost was $32,500 paid for by the Board of Education and money repaid to the Board out of the school athletic treasury over the years.

Closure: 1991

Start High school was built to ease the over crowding of DeVilbiss.  In 1991 DHS was closed and Start remained open.  Macomber HS was closed at that time also.

On Tremainsville Rd used to be a park.  Roy C. Start (Drug Store) donated the property.
There is a YMCA next to the school.  Hilton Murphy was in on the building of the school.
Of course Spartans is the mascot.  Very nice campus.

The old DHS now (1999) houses a High Tech School -- in the newer part called a Skill Center.
They make solar bikes, yo-yos etc.  Real neat concept but still needs more students.
It's a rather new idea.  They also build robots.
DeVilbiss still looks the same.  At one time there was talk of making it into a
junior high but, we now have DeVeaux Junior High.  We now have K-6 buildings,
Junior Highs 7-8th and regular High schools.  Lots of things have changed.

We have a High School in south Toledo called Bowsher named after E. L. Bowsher, one time
Superintendent of Toledo Public Schools. (Information from Laura Sweet . . '55)
