Lyle & Laura Sweet
We will be married 44 years on Aug. 11th, 2000. We both lived in the same neighborhood and have migrated about 1 1/2 miles to where we live now. We have been activists most of our lives one way or another. Lyle coached boys baseball for twelve years in Whittier Jets and Ken Mar Junior Knot hole leagues. He was a four year varsity player at DeVilbiss so it was natural.
We have 3 sons and 1 daughter -- all married, and five granddaughters at present. We were both active in the PTA with our children.
I became the first woman city-wide PTA president. This enabled me to have a seat on the Toledo Board of Education. I have also been very active with the Democratic Party. I held the elected position of Secretary of the Central Committee for 6 years. In 1996 I attended the inauguration of President Clinton, the Ohio-Pennsylvania Presidents ball and several other events while in Washington. In 1996 I received the Lucas County Democratic Woman of the Year Award (Judge Geradine Macelwane Award). This is the highest award for volunteer women in Lucas County. I also was presented a certificate of appreciation from the John F. Kennedy performing arts center in Washington, DC 1980, for my support and work for the ARTS and Education projects.
Our latest adventure is family history. We were planning a trip to Nova Scotia last year because there was a Sweet on the Titanic that survived and we would liked to have tracked that down. My mother was a Brown and that also took us to Nova Scotia. Lyle had open heart surgery last year and that slowed us down but he is doing well now.My brother graduated in '52 his name is Jim Gray. He migrated to Atlanta Georgia and has stayed there. He has always been in construction one way or another. Now retired he has become a mason, 32degree and an active shriner. Would you believe he drives people back to Ohio for special needs (Shrine Hospital) in Cincinnati. His wife is executive secretary Yaarab shrine, Atlanta Georgia.
Lyle worked at the Toledo Scale as Supervisor of the Warehouse until it closed. Now he's with the Toledo Board of Education - - same job title. I was a house wife until the children were older and now work as Secretary to the Nurse at the High School level.
