Defense to Weak Two's

Common Bids. Weak Two openers and Overcalls are the most common preemptive opener or overcall. To compete, bid your suit at the two or three level or double with a regular strength takeout double and the distribution a normal Double promises. Be careful of vulnerability, and expect to get a poor score sometimes -- so will your competition, though, so be brave.

One of the reasons we play the Mini-Roman 2¨ and Flannery 2© openers is that the preemptive value of the Weak 2©, and especially the Weak 2¨, is lessened by the fact that you give away your distribution and points.

They Don't Scare Me! These Weak Two bids don't scare anybody experienced in duplicate, although they have preemptive value and you should learn them early and use them often.

Two Spades is our only Weak Two Opener, and it's effective as it forces the opponents to start at the three level. We do use Weak Jump Overcalls of all four suits.
