Other Types of Tournament Events
Two Days Long ? Some events will be scheduled over two days instead of on a single day. They may be afternoons, evening or mornings. These schedules accommodate people who work during the day or who can't stay up (or out) at night, or those who want to play three sessions per day.
Side Games Pairs Events. There are Side Games at every session - single session open games for those who can't play two sessions. (These are popular with directors, who don't get to play while they are working, of course.) Continuous. Nowadays they are called Continuous Pairs and they are a new form of event, with big winners. In continuous pairs, you can play in any number of sessions, perhaps all week long and even with different partners. The highest averages for the week win the event and the master points.
Knockouts Team Events. Knockouts are team events, played once a day, in which your team plays another for 28 boards, using IMP scoring. The winning team plays the next day; the losing one is 'knocked out'. You buy entries for each day you play. Knockouts may go on for 5 or 6 days, so be sure you can play each day if you start them. Everyone Plays. You may have a fifth and a sixth player on a Knockout Team, but each must play in at least one match. This works well when some team members can't play one evening or afternoon, of for those who just can't take the stress of being 'knocked out' every day.
Believe it or not, there are sometime Individual Events, where you don't have a partner -- you sit down and play a few boards with someone, then get up and play the next round with someone else!
It's a wild and woolly time, and not just right for everyone, but to each his own.
