Takeout Doubles

Our takeout doubles are Standard American style.

An Opener. They show opening hand values with good support for all unbid suits and they guarantee four+ of any unbid major suit if the opening was in a major, and guarantee at least 4 - 3 in the majors if the opening was a minor. (1NT takeout doubles are artificial; see the Brozel Convention)

The Very Worst Bid in Bridge. The worst bid in bridge is to make a takeout double hoping partner won't bid the suit you are short in, and then attempting to correct your fabrication with another bid. That is a Rebid by Doubler, meaning a hand of 18 HCP or better. Divorce, banishment, mayhem or homicide lay down that path.
