Rebidding After Jacoby Transfers

Jacoby Transfer is not a Weak Bid -- Nor a Strong Bid. Subsequent bids by responder after a Jacoby Transfer can vary considerably because his hand is unlimited. Anything from Pass to Slam sequences may follow a Jacoby Transfer.

Opener should simply respond to questions -- responder is in charge.

In addition to the 5 card major promised by responder:

  • Any game bid by responder guarantees 10+ points
  • 2NT by responder shows 8-9 HCP balanced and invites 3NT
  • A raise to 3 Hearts/Spades by responder shows 8-9 dummy points in a suit-oriented hand
  • 3 Clubs or 3 Diamonds by responder shows a second 4 or 5 card suit. This bid is not weak.

Use the weak minor suit transfer only with Stayman, not with Jacoby

Openers Choices. 1NT opener may bid game with a 3+ card fit for the transferred suit and a maximum (16+ HCP) hand only if responder raises to the three level in Hearts or Spades.

Opener should try 3 NT with a minor second suit fit and a maximum HCP hand.
