Notrump Openings With 5 Card Majors
| Do
It - - Sometimes. Our NT opening distribution
includes any combination not including any singleton or void. In particular, it may include a hand with a poor five card major. |
| Hands with a good five card major should open one of the major rather than 1 NT. Our definition of "good" is a suit containing 5 HCP or more: AJxxx or KQ10xx but not KJxxx or QJxxx. |
| Example 1 NT openers in hands including 5 card majors: |
| ª Kxxxx | ª Jxxxx |
| © Qxx | © KJx |
| ¨ Ax | ¨ AK |
| § AKJ | § Kxx |
| Maximum | Minimum |
| You could argue
either way about opening No Trump in hands with 5 card majors, but we think this way is
the most descriptive of the hand at opening time. Either way you choose to treat these hands, be consistent so your partner can trust your opening 1 No Trump bids. |
